I always thought this was the kind of thing that happened to other people. But the terrible ordeal I am being subjected to proves that even ordinary mortals are not immune to the horrors one reads about occasionally in the newspapers.
For the past 10 months I have been receiving regularly a bill for the non-existent telephone (No: 5852182). When I first received the bill, I immediately wrote to the Divisional Engineer, pointing out that this telephone was not in my use, and that it did not exist. A simple test (dialling the number) could prove it.
Not receiving any reply, I went to the Clifton Telephone Exchange and was assured that it was a computer error and everything would be sorted out. But the joke continues.
What I fail to understand is how a non-existent telephone bill can run up a bill for Rs. 35780. Something is terribly wrong somewhere, and I hope some kind soul in the Telephone Department reads this and takes some action before I lose my mental balance.
