It was of course bound to fail. The PMLN-led government tried to do too much in a hurry. The main purpose of the amendments was to appoint compliant judges who are friendly with the ministers of the present government and would not give verdicts against them. Of course this was done because the present judiciary is almost entirely controlled by Imran Khan and his associates. The way these judges have given bail and verdicts favorable to him and his party members makes one think that they are in his pocket.
Of course I do not agree with the present government's attempts to influence the judiciary. But the question arises, judges are human, so how can you prevent them from being sympathetic to those who appoint them?
In the US, Trump appointed the majority of judges in the current Supreme Court, so he's been able to get his way and remains outside prison. But then, there have been lower court judges who have convicted him, so there must be some independent judges there, which is something you can't say about Pakistani courts.
Some means must be found to ensure that our courts remain impartial and independent at the same time. It will be a long time before that is done.
