Raid the evaders

This refers to the news report ‘FBR mulling options to penalize
unregistered traders’ (April 25, 2024). While the imposition of an extra tax of
10 to 15 per cent on unregistered traders appears feasible, it is not likely to
succeed unless smuggling is curtailed.
Since most of our traders are unregistered, they will simply buy
from smugglers. There are many markets in Pakistan where smuggled items are
sold. It would be more beneficial for the country if such shops are raided and
the seized goods are auctioned off.
