WRONG INFORMATION:
Published in Dawn on July

This is with reference
to the report ‘Timeline: Cyclones over the years with Pakistan in their path’
(Dawn.Com, June 13). The information given about the cyclone that had
supposedly hit Karachi on Dec 15, 1965, and “killed around 10,000 people” is
factually incorrect.
The cyclone had actually struck Chittagong in the
erstwhile East Pakistan which subsequently became Bangladesh. The
misleading information is available on a personal blog of a ‘weather hobbyist’,
and has unfortunately been mentioned even in a document titled: “Living With
Disasters: Disaster profiling of districts of Pakistan’ that is available on
the website of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Let there be
no confusion, Karachi has never in its history faced such a calamity.
