POL price hike

Sir: This is with reference to the editorial ‘POL price hike’ (Daily Times, April 3, 2011). Since the government does not have the will to tax agricultural income, it is compelled to raise revenue by hiking up POL prices, imposing flood tax surcharge and other measures, which ultimately affect the common man. The salaried class contributes 200 billion to the national exchequer, while the industrialists and other urban businessmen contribute more than 800 million. So why should wealthy farmers be exempted from paying the income tax? Either the government should tax the farmers or exempt the salaried class from paying income tax as well.
