With reference to the news item `Majority of eateries `spurn`
e-invoice monitoring system` (Sept 23), one would like to know why only the
Punjab government takes innovative steps to improve governance.
Karachi has more restaurants than Lahore, yet the Sindh government has done
nothing to improve sales tax collection.
Most restaurants charge sales tax from diners but how do we know whether the
amount is given to the provincial government.
There was a time when a famous restaurant on Bunder Road was caught many times
evading excise duty. Those were the days when CBR officials would closely
monitor the number of customers dining in restaurants and then determine if
there was any evasion.
The Sindh government should introduce e-invoice filing and monitoring system in
the restaurants under its jurisdiction.
