Peer pressure

WITH reference to Rahul Sharma's letter ("Curious argument" August 15), I believe that when 40 per cent of its people are going to bed hungry every night, it doesn't make sense for India to donate an Airbus to Afghanistan.
The tragedy of course is that Pakistan will be compelled to match India's gesture. In fact, there are already reports that Pakistan plans to gift a jumbo jet to Afghanistan. I just hope that this is not true.

If Pakistan really wants to give something, it should be something that it has a surplus of (such as wheat) and not a jumbo jet (which it needs for its own self, considering that all flights from Karachi to other Pakistani towns are always packed).
