A wrong move

Sir: This is with reference to your editorial ‘Ignominious retreat’ (Daily Times, October 6, 2013). By imposing two percent additional general sales tax (GST) on 40 items, the government is encouraging those who indulge in under-invoicing, mis-declaration and smuggling. Slowly but surely, the country’s manufacturing sector is shrinking, and it will not be long before we are forced to import almost every item of daily use, as factories will close down and thousands of Pakistanis will become jobless. The only way to increase revenue is to recover tax from the big fish who have enough money to buy property and construct buildings in foreign countries but contribute hardly anything to the national exchequer.
