Tax evasion

Tax evasion

Sir: I am writing in reference to Mohammad Khan Sial’s letter ‘Tax evasion by industrialists’ (Daily Times, March 7, 2011). It seems that the writer is one of those Pakistanis who do not know that it is non-payment of income tax by agriculturists that is destroying the country. I am astonished at his assertion that agriculturists give away 50 percent of their profits to peasants. For a start, I suggest that he and his fellow agriculturists start paying the minimum wage of Rs 7,000 per month to the tillers.

He should also inform us if the feudals are providing ‘other facilities’, which he says are not provided by industrialists. Rather than taking action against industrialists (who are also compelled by the government to employ surplus and useless employees), it would be better if the government now starts recovering income tax from agriculturists.
