Lt-Col (r) Mukhtar Ahmed Butt is wrong in saying that "it was a shortage of troops and military hardware that caused us the loss of our eastern wing in 1971". We lost the war because of the refusal of Mr Z A Bhutto to recognise the leader of the majority party (Awami League) in parliament to be prime minister, and the subsequent alienation of the people of East Pakistan. Moreover, India's annual defence budget is not $1,475 billion, as he claims, it is $30 billion dollars.
