moon-sighting

Saturday, October 04, 2008, Shawwal 04, 1429 A.H

For a number of years now we have seen Eid being observed on different days in the country. Usually the whole of NWFP and parts of Balochistan celebrate the festival a day before the people who live in the other parts of Pakistan. This year too we were subjected to two-hour suspense while the moon-watching mullahs first said that the moon hadn't been sighted, and then announced that it had been seen. It's time now for the government to abolish the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and tell the people to celebrate Eid one day after the Saudis do, since the moon appears in our skies a day after it is sighted in Saudi Arabia. This will save the country a lot of money which is spent by those grey-beards every year on deciding which day Eid is to be observed.
