Whenever a government is threatened with awkward questions about its lack of performance, it turns to Islam to divert attention. In the past, we have seen school girls as young as nine years old being forced to don the all-enveloping burqa. This government is no different. They have suddenly concluded that Islam is in great danger. The "Punjab Tahaffuz-e-Bunyad-e-Islam Bill 2020", as its name suggests, is meant to protect the foundations on which Islam is built, and undoubtedly one of those foundations is the wearing of the burqa by women and growing beards by men.

Then there is that judge of the Supreme Court (undoubtedly a former member of the Jamat-e-Islami or another religious party) who wants to ban YouTube. One wonders how such people get to be judges. He asks "Is criticism of the EU and the U.S.allowed on YouTube?" Apparently he doesn't know that it is allowed, not only on YouTube, but also on Facebook, Twitter and other social media forums. Fortunately two members of Imran Khan's cabinet and advisors have advised against the banning of YouTube (as it was done in the past and did great harm). Apparently this judge (Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin) doesn't like it if judges are mocked. He asked the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had taken notice of such happenings on the platform where judges are mocked and embarrassed. He should read foreign newspapers and watch American comedians on YouTube, he will be amazed to see how Trump and others (even judges) are mocked.

It seems that the establishment realizes it is on a losing wicket and will go to any lengths to protect its interests. We know how they kidnapped journalist Matiullah Jan the other day but were forced to release him after twelve hours following an outcry in the social media. A few months back Gul Bukhari was similarly picked up but (being a UK national) she had to be released after eight hours.

I won't be surprised if they decide to ban Twitter and Facebook as well, if not the internet itself. They should be told that the Soviet Union disintegrated despite a complete clampdown on the media for many years.
