Tax amnesty scheme

Sir: According to a news item, the Punjab Chief Minister is trying to persuade the Finance Minister to announce a tax amnesty scheme for those non-filer traders who have refused to get registered and do not wish to pay taxes. It seems that Pakistan is the only country in the world where tax thieves are rewarded, while the honest taxpaying class is penalised. If the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government agrees to the scheme, it will only prove what we have suspected all along: this party does not care for the interests of the nation. Rather it will take any steps to hold on to power, even if it means destroying the country. Instead of rewarding tax-evading traders, the government should arrest them and take them out in processions with their faces blackened. Their assets should be confiscated and they should be made to serve time in jails. If the government cannot do that, but accepts the unreasonable demands of traders, the least it can do is to return the amount of taxes paid by honest citizens over the past 10 years.
