We need more working days to survive

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I’ve always wondered why we have a Sindh government. Now I know the reason. It’s there so that its chief minister can declare a holiday whenever he feels like it. Consider his latest announcement declaring Friday, February 26, a holiday. There’s already a holiday on Saturday, February 27, on account of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi along with the weekly off on Sunday, which means there will be three consecutive holidays. What was the need to give the public another day off? Of course, it really makes no difference to Sindh government employees who work only when their interests are involved. Usually they are completely relaxed at their desks, arms hanging down, feet resting on their tables and drinking tea every hour.

But to those of us who have to meet deadlines (export consignments, for instance), another holiday means more expense. But perhaps the chief minister thinks industrialists and exporters don’t have any real work to do. It’s time someone told him the shocking truth: this country needs more working days to survive.
