‘Crushed by poverty’

Thursday, 17 Sep, 2009

ONE great advantage of being the prime minister of Pakistan is that you don’t have to stand in line for free wheat flour and risk your life.

Nor does it bother you that 15 poor people were killed trying to get free flour, or that a 10-year-old boy and a man were killed in a stampede to get the stuff at subsidised rates.

But you do have to make a few telephone calls to get your wife’s loan of Rs171m (plus 20 years’ interest) written off by NAB. Pakistan Zindabad.
