minimum wage

Monday, March 30, 2009
Last year the prime minister announced Rs6,000 per month as the minimum monthly salary in the country. However, there is some confusion among employers on this matter. According to some people I know, this salary is for government employees only; others say that shops and offices as well as small factories are exempted. The other day there was a news item about a watchman complaining that he couldn’t afford to marry as he was being paid only five thousand rupees for working twelve hours a day every month.

As for the agricultural sector, all farmers I know say they cannot afford to pay this amount to their managers, let alone the workers in the fields. Will the government clarify the position?
